Taking Smartlife Flexi to market digitally

Supporting the go-to-market of a voluntary savings product built around personal goals, with digital becoming the leading sign-up route in its early growth.

Chapter 1

Context

Smartlife Flexi was launched as a voluntary savings product for people who wanted to save towards personal goals, extending NSSF’s proposition beyond mandatory retirement saving.

ChallengeThe marketing task went beyond awareness. The proposition needed to be easy to understand, trusted and simple to join across a broad working population, while turning digital interest into completed registrations and funded accounts.

Chapter 2

Role

I contributed to shaping and taking the product to market as part of the NSSF team, with a particular focus on digital distribution, content, customer journeys and acquisition.

Chapter 3

Approach

  1. Connected product messaging to real savings goals rather than abstract financial language.
  2. Used digital channels to support discovery, education and registration across the customer journey.
  3. Built campaign activity around measurable sign-up behaviour rather than awareness alone.
  4. Worked within the wider launch team to make the digital journey a core distribution route for the product.

Chapter 4

Outcomes

  • By 2026, more than 69% of sign-ups were happening online.
  • Over Ugx 180 billion in total voluntary contributions in 20 months

Chapter 5

Lessons

For a digital financial product, the strongest marketing channel is often the product journey itself. Communication can create interest, but trust and ease determine whether that interest becomes a funded account.
